Trivia: Bert and Ernie = Banana and Orange

The Muppets Bert and Ernie were designed by Don Sahlin based on two fruits: Bert was a banana and Ernie was an orange.

Rumor was, Bert and Ernie were named after two characters in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" (Bert the cop and Ernie the cabbie).

Years ago in Amsterdam, Holland during the annual Queensday celebration I was standing in the crowd on a bridge next to an older American couple for about 5 minutes. The couple enjoyed looking at all the celebrating people in the boats at our feet, and wanted to share their moment with someone because they turned to me and said how much they liked the atmosphere and how a good time they had. Then two big balloons of Bert and Ernie past by and the man told me proudly he was family (I think uncle) of the person who named them and that Bert was named after him. His wife nodded as proud as him. I totally believed them, we were watching people, there was music and noise, no need for conversation or impressing someone, just sharing the atmosphere and when Bert and Ernie pass by in front of your face it's impossible nót to tell someone he's named after you, if it is true.

Heya Alex, I run a Muppet fan site (ToughPigs.com) and I contribute to the Muppet Wiki (muppet.wikia.com), but I've never heard that Bert and Ernie were based on fruits. What's your source for this?
