I'm pretty sure he used various colors of tapes. Such as how duct tape can come in black, blue, and gray. Packing tape (that funny smelling one) tend to come in various shades of brown...which is why this picture has a ton of brown shades of various dark and light forms.

... and then painting or printing over them? that picture is just too perfect to be made of JUST tape. mixed media... tape mixed with what?
